I must take exception to Minority leader Peter Schmitt's article, "A Shameless Grab for Power." [January 10, 2003 Syosset-Jericho Tribune]. As a concerned citizen, I went to the public hearing at Westbury Town Hall on Dec. 27 and examined the Adjustment Plan to annex A, or in other words, the proposal of the legislature's minority party. That plan would carve up the Syosset-Woodbury community along artificial lines into gerrymandered districts.
To paraphrase Legislator Schmitt's own words, relationships with legislators that have been built and nurtured over the years will be cut out from under us. Annex A, or the majority's plan, keeps Syosset-Woodbury in one legislative district and serves to preserve and enhance the sense of community in Syosset-Woodbury.
I don't know about the rest of Nassau's towns, but I do know that in my town, Legislator Schmitt's argument just doesn't make any sense.
