Mike Walsh, a Syosset resident and a retired graphic artist, recently published a book called Alpha Male, which is available now on the Internet.
The book is based in Alaska and it refers to the order of domination in a wolf pack. "First thing you do, is never underestimate your prey," said Walsh. "A wolf can sleep through a blizzard. He can run over a hundred miles without a rest. He can go days without water. He eats a third of his weight in one meal. He can pick up the scent of a prey from over a mile away. He is a relentless hunter who will wear down his prey until it drops from exhaustion no matter how big it is. A single wolf can bring down a full-grown moose. He never gives up once he has made up his mind."
The character in the book uttered those words to a group of businessmen from New York City on a wolf-hunting trip in Alaska. Miles Coffin, an authority on wolves, is hired to guide them into the wilderness. The men are Max Taylor, chairman of a cosmetics company and his sons, Giff and Andy, who are at odds with each other. Although Coffin is their guide he is also a man with a purpose - to hunt and kill Midnight, a large black wolf, with whom he has a personal vendetta.
The idea for the book, according to Walsh, came through a conversation he had with a colleague.
Walsh is a veteran member of American Legion Post 175. Over the years he has produced many watercolor and oil paintings depicting cityscapes, landscapes, seascapes, wildlife scenes and has had two one-person shows.
Walsh lives in Syosset with his wife, Terri and their two married daughters and six grandchildren live nearby.
