I am shocked and disgusted that the vote on the bond issue for the expansion of the Syosset Library failed. This would have cost Syosset taxpayers $5 per month. What would we have gotten for this amount? A larger, more modern facility that would have provided the much-needed room for the most current materials. To rent one video at Blockbuster costs $5. To buy a new book at Borders is in the teens at minimum.

We're taxed an alarming rate at all levels of government. Most of us don't say a word when our tax dollars are used for Congress members to take limousines to work. All sorts of pork barrel legislation is passed, of which we get no benefit.

But the fact that Syosset residents, a community who I mistakenly thought put such a high value on education won't fork over a whopping $5 a month for something that we will get a direct benefit from is mind-boggling.
