The Syosset Power (U11) girls soccer team topped the Oyster Bay Avalanche 1-0 in a grinding duel on October 19. Defense was the name of the game, as the Power turned back Avalanche attackers throughout that game.

Syosset goalie Taylor Tully dove, scrambled and leapt in making many dramatic saves against a constantly attacking Oyster Bay. A solid wall of defense was provided by the speedy Jenna Chimon, and by Kristen Carton, Lauren Quinn and Julie Baharestani, who cleared the ball with towering kicks that swiftly turned the tide of the game.

Late in the first half, the Power jumped to a 1-0 lead on a well executed passing attack. It culminated when Lily Mummert drove a shot into the opposing goal on an assist from Heidi Smolevitz. Both teams were scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Tenacious in midfield and offense were Aly Zuckerman, Melanie Woerner, Gina Rutigliano, Tina Prestano and Olivia DeLisa.

The win was especially sweet for coach Emma Hayes, who celebrated her birthday the same day.
