All you have to do is ask any Lindenhurst Bulldog Senior player. The first half was owned by the Bulldogs, the Braves only having two minutes of offense, with those two minutes the first offensive play scored a touchdown, the second an extra point. It was not until late in the second quarter that the Braves got the ball and the clock ran out, we have all heard that one before.
The second half was a totally different game. The Braves down 21-7, they made some great plays and nothing short of one of those great comebacks of all time. First defense made some adjustments, what a job they did Mike Quinn, JD - Jimmy Doyle, Sean Baynes, Danny Rocco, Robbie Nedbor-Gross and the Lebron brothers . Zero points in the second half not even close. Defense Coach Joe Van Cott sent in the second team of Kevin Gusz, Matt Leone, Randy Davis, giving the starters a breath of air.
Special teams led by Luke Nawrocki also contributed a great day kicking the ball deep, not allowing much if any return. The offense played the game of the year. Taliek Vasquez scored four touchdowns one of those defensively. Jose Lebron at the helm most of the day in the shot gun, with Mike DeRosa , Gabby Lebron and PJ Nunez at his side all making plays and the front line of Sean Baynes, Steve Santa , Danny Rocco, Luke Nawrocki, Dennis Freund and Brian Lupo; other big contributors were Robbie Nedbor-Gross Brian and Danny Nickel at the ends and receivers.
Coach Quinn said the turning points of the game were "One...making defense changes, Two...great Special Team play, Three...the offense down on our 30 with 7 to go fourth down, I said kick, Coach Baynes informed me that they want to go for it...Coach, he said: "It's Their Game," Coach Quinn replies, - "Go For It Then." They did, they made it two plays later a touchdown. Patience, tenacity, intensity and execution won this game today with a great bunch of young men, Let's bring on Levittown "
The Syosset Midget Red might have been thinking a week ahead to its showdown with Brentwood and ran into a gritty Glen Cove football club today. Today's victory elevated the Braves record to 4 -0 leaving them as one of two remaining unbeaten teams in the division.
Glen Cove scored on its first drive to lead the Braves 6-0 as the prospect of upsetting the powerful Syosset team began to cultivate. In customary fashion, Joe Gallo and the Syosset offense came storming back on the very first play from scrimmage. Gallo took the ball on a power dive and did not stop until he reached the end zone 48 yards away knotting the score at 6.
The Syosset defense regrouped and made the Glen Cove club earn every yard from then on. Guard Michael McIntyre played an outstanding defensive game disrupting the Glen Cove offense all daylong. Michael Moore recorded his second sack of the season on an important third down try resulting in a 12-yard loss. Branden Amberger snagged an onside kick saving an offensive possession for the Braves.
Syosset came out in the third quarter and drove the length of the field to take the lead for good on a Matt Ramirez TD run, his first of the year. Joe Gallo added the extra point to give the Braves a 13-6 lead. Logan Ehrens kept this drive alive as the Braves were faced with fourth down and four to go for a first down. Ehrens gained six on a tough run enabling the drive to continue. Gallo added runs of 55 and 45 yards to keep the game out of reach for Glen Cove.
Next week is the battle of the unbeaten as Syosset travels to Brentwood. Fortunately for Syosset Brenden Kennedy returns to the lineup from a knee injury suffered earlier this season. "In football one of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when an athlete is overtaken by temporary defeat. Every football player is guilty of this mistake at one time or another. The boys came out with a purpose which was to win and that they did. The young athletes overcame the obstacle of temporary defeat today," said Coach Ehrens.
Midget White played a tough game this week away against Copiague Silver. Even though the first half wasn't such a good showing; they bounced back and came out after halftime as a different and more aggressive and tenacious team.
The first numbers put up for these guys was by their defensive line with a sack in the end zone resulting in two points for a safety. Once getting a taste of success at scoring, the whole team fired up and the offense came to life. They started making and sustaining their blocks allowing the backfield some running room to score some touchdowns. Two touchdowns and an extra point later the game was over.
Although they came away with a loss of 28-15, they started to come together, play like a team with a purpose and put the numbers up!!
QB Mike Mcilwee had a 20-yard pass intercepted on the Braves opening drive. Wantagh turned the pick off into a 50-yard drive inside the Syosset 10-yard line. The tough Brave defense held on for three downs but could not hold off on fourth and goal from the 4-yard line. Wantagh scored to go ahead but missed the conversion leaving the score at 6-0 at the half.
The third quarter saw tough defense from both sides of the ball. It wasn't until early in the fourth quarter that Angelo Galasso broke through the line on a 36-crossbuck and cut outside to out run the defense and score. Sean Lohan kicked the conversion through with authority to put the Braves ahead 8-6. The Syosset defense was unable to stop the Wantagh offense on the following series. The Braves gave up a long run to fall behind 12-8. With little time left in the game the Braves tried their best to get down field to score, but there just wasn't enough time. The Pee Wee record is 2-1-1. The Braves took a tough first loss today and that's part of football, but each and every boy played their best and should not be discouraged. You all need to keep your "chins up" learn from this game and let's go get Lindenhurst next week!
A tough and determined Syosset Squad played hard against a big and very experienced Levittown Squad. Jimmy Corcoran did a great job leading the team on his first start as quarterback. Chris Tortora churned out tough yardage all day before finally being rewarded with his first TD. Gary Weinstein put two more up on the board with some well executed runs. Gary's total TDs for the year are now at six (in only three games). We kept up with this team all game, unfortunately we ran out of gas in the fourth quarter. Even though it's hard playing at this level with a team with only seven veterans, it's twice as hard when players must play every down...it's great to have a bunch of kids that never give up and give110 percent and can stand head to head and be competitive with the powerhouses in this league. We'll get North Babylon (another powerhouse) this weekend.
