The Jericho Rockets shut out the Port Washington Jaguars 3 - 0 this weekend improving their record to 2 - 0.
The Rockets continued their excellent play as a team. The team was focused on maintaining their positions, communicating and staying within their limits as players. A perfect example is when Hillary Kessner was playing right wing. As the ball was being advanced on the left wing, Hillary placed herself in front of the goal. When the ball was crossed she was in perfect position to kick the ball into the back of the net. Alison Kinzer scored the other two goals on some heads up playing. Taking advantage of a miscue on the goalkeeper's part, Allie slammed home a goal.
Again the defense anchored the team. Goalie Julie Avrutine played an excellent first half of the game. Normally she comes out of the goal for the second half. However, she stayed in the goal for the first ten minutes of the second half and this proved to be an essential ingredient in the win as she sparkled during this time frame. This was a tremendous boost for the team. Nicole Kapner replaced her in goal. Facing a penalty kick, Nicole was able to maintain the shutout and show the crowd her powerful kicks.
Shelby "Gazelle" Bates played phenomenally at sweeper. Her speed allows her to track down the attacking players and put a crimp in their offensive plans. Also playing very well on defense was Melissa Rudofsky, Shelby Rudolph, Reisa Feigenbaum, Jordi Diamond and Marissa Krauser. Unfortunately, Marissa went down with an injury and the team wishes her a fast recovery.
The offense also put in an excellent performance. They have scored six goals in two games. Making her debut at midfield, Sam Perlstein did a fine job. Also playing well at midfield was Rachael "Hardnose" Podbielak. At forward Nicole Wanderman, Shana Feibus, Lauren "feisty" Tiffen and Lindsay Hamburg all contributed to the win. The offense is really coming together as a unit and they are playing very well together. Quick short passes and using the wings has been a key for this offensive unit.
Good job girls and good luck in the game next week.
