Apple & Eve, one of the largest independent juice companies in the US, sponsored the Inaugural Apple & Eve Tennis Classic, presented by Pathmark, a USTA-sanctioned women's challenger event with a $50,000 purse. The tournament, one of only two professional tennis events on Long Island, was played during the week of July 14-21, just five weeks before qualifying rounds for the US Open.

"The Apple & Eve Tennis Classic was a wonderful opportunity to watch many of the top women tennis players in the world compete," said Apple & Eve Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Cary Crane. 'The tournament showcased many top-rated young international stars who are on their way to the US Open. Apple & Eve's 100 percent juice products were a good match for the energy of these outstanding athletes, and we were pleased to be a part of this exciting, world-class event."

The main singles draw consisted of 32 women, all world-ranked players, competing on the international level. Tournament organizers anticipated player entries from countries around the world. The Long Island Tennis & Sports Foundation, founder of the event, donated the Cup. The $50,000 purse included a check for $7,200 for the tournament's singles winner. The first runner-up received a check in the amount of $4,240 and doubles winners shared prize money of $3,100.

The event was played on a hard, outdoor surface at tennis courts inside the Town of Oyster Bay's Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, in Woodbury.

Qualifying rounds took place on Sunday, July 14 and Monday, July 15. The Women's Main Draw took place Tuesday, July 16 - Sunday, July 21. Semifinals (singles and doubles) were played on Saturday, July 20 at 11 a.m. Finals (singles and doubles) were played on Sunday, July 21 at 11 a.m.

The Long Island Tennis & Sports Foundation was designated by the USTA as the co-promoter and was the sole beneficiary of the tournament. The New York Junior Tennis League, started in 1969 by the late Arthur Ashe, is also a co-promoter.
