GCC Rockers take the Syosset Youth Athletic Council girl's senior league championship 3 to 2 against Falco's Pizza. GCC's Cara Savarese and Falco's Jayshree Narendran dueled it out from the pitcher's mound in a close championship game last Tuesday evening. Both pitchers handed in outstanding performances dishing out 12 and 9 strikeouts, respectively. Rocker Nicole Castellano scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice by Brittany Oliven. Danielle Savarese hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third to put GCC Rockers up 2-0. The top of the fourth started off with Chelsea Rutman making a great catch behind the bag at second.
Then Falco's Pizza got on board with 2 runs with one swing of the bat. Lauren Sugerman hit a hard line drive in the gap at left center field to tie the game 2-23. Fine defensive plays by Pizza Girls Katie Krakchuk, Heather Rosenblum and Kelly Esposito kept the game close. Both teams, first place winners in their divisions, providing nail-biting entertainment for their loyal fans.
Ultimately it was the Rockers who shook the house. Brittany Zucker and Valerie Ward were one for two. The catching tandem of Hayley Assael and Arielle Faden were steady behind the plate as Cara focused on throwing strikes. Arielle made a great catch on a pop fly behind the plate. Brittany Godsell and Emily Zaffos provided defensive support rounding out the indomitable GCC Rockers. Cara supplied her own power in the top of the fifth with a double scoring Katie Moran all the way from first with the game winning run.
Girl Power won the championship game against the undefeated Hometrust in a thrilling 3-1 victory. Dana Ettinger pitched an overpowering game striking out over ten batters. She was supported with great catching by Nicole Bock. Lauren Ettinger was flawless at first base. Samantha Shapiro had a beautiful RBI triple and Alexa Trotta had a key hit in the game. Jackie Finkler made an incredible throw from third to get a big out. Stephanie Ritter played great at second while Cortney Rosen, Lauren Gulamerian and Amanda Targovnik were tremendous in the outfield. The game ended in spectacular fashion with an incredible double play turned by Erica Raskin.
The games are more intense not that pitching is involved. Each team batted around two times. Ashley Freedman of Marc Pharmaceuticals tossed the ball to Rebekah Sugarman for a force out at third base. Jamie Wiseman had an infield fly ball hit. Jamie Cohen had an infield hit. Later in the game, Jamie C, having a great defensive day, threw to first base for an out and later stepped on second base for a force out. Casey Targovnik hit a ground ball for a single. All the girls shook hands and look forward to their next opponent.
The last game of the season was a makeup game from a rainout between the two teams. Each team batter around two times and the T was only used once. Every girl got a hit. Marc Pharmaceuticals' Ashley Freedman lifted the ball for a double that drove in two runs. Alexandra McGannon tipped the ball foul and then had a solid hit up the middle. Jamie Cohen's shot went into the air. The Marc Pharmaceuticals team thanked their coach Howard Sugarman and his assistants for all their dedication this season. Everyone is looking forward to next season.
