On Saturday, June 22, Town of Oyster Bay Parklet J-6, which is located on North Marginal Road just west of 106/107 in Jericho, was renamed Glen J. Winuk Memorial Park in honor of the late Glenn Winuk.

Winuk was a firefighter and attorney who lost his life during the rescue effort of September 11 at the World Trade Center. Just after the towers were hit on September 11, Winuk, a partner in the law firm Holland & Knight LLP, first helped evacuate tenants of his office building at 195 Broadway, about a block away from Ground Zero.

He then identified himself as a rescue professional to other rescue workers on the scene, borrowed a mask, gloves and First Response medic bag and ran toward the disaster. He perished as the South Tower fell minutes later. Winuk's remains were recovered, medic bag by his side, protective gloves on his hands, on Wednesday, March 20.

Winuk served the community for 19 years as a volunteer firefighter and EMT with the Jericho Fire Department. He rose to the rank of lieutenant of Engine Company 2 and served a term as commissioner of the Jericho Fire District. Winuk was cited many times for his acts of bravery throughout his firefighting career, which included rushing to the scene to render aid in 1993 when terrorists bombed the World Trade Center and at the Avianca plane crash on Long Island in 1990.

At the dedication ceremony, a boulder was unveiled, which was inscribed with a bronze plaque that reads, "This park is dedicated in loving memory of Glenn J. Winuk. 1961-2001. Attorney. Member of the Jericho Fire Department; Former Commissioner, Jericho Fire District; Emergency Medical Technician. Glenn died on September 11, 2001, when he courageously left his place of work to render aid to the injured and assist in the evacuation of the south tower of the World Trade Center. May his bravery and kindness to others never be forgotten."

"Glenn was out of harm's way in a law office on September 11," said Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto at the ceremony. "As others were running away, Glenn was running the opposite way - toward the danger ... Glenn is directly responsible for all of the freedom and opportunities that we enjoy today."

Venditto explained that everyone should have a role model and asked that rather than going to the movies to find someone to admire from Hollywood, people come to Glenn J. Winuk Memorial Park and think about and remember a real role model and a real hero - Glenn. "You couldn't ask for a better role model than Glenn Winuk," he said.

Venditto presented the Winuk family with a citation honoring the memory of Glenn. Jay Winuk, Glenn's brother, accepted the citation on behalf of his family.

Andrew Sausmer, fellow firefighter and a close friend of Glenn, spoke to the many in attendance on Saturday. "This rock is a reminder to enjoy this park," said Sausmer, who asked all residents to come to the park often and remember Glenn.

"There is no more fitting a tribute to Glenn than what we are doing here today," said Jay Winuk. "He would have chosen this park being named after him over Times Square. Spider Park [as the residents knew this park before the dedication] holds great significance. It was our park as we were growing up. Now it is Glenn's park for all eternity."
