The sun shone brightly on Jericho Athletic Association's annual picnic at Jericho High School on Saturday, June 8. On the softball fields beyond the Zorn's chicken and Ralph's ices, the Rockville Centre Pharmacy Devil Rays of the girls third and fourth grade division made hay with a 5-4 comeback victory over the C.O. Bigelow Chemists Yankees. It was the closest, lowest-scoring game of the year for both teams.

Pitchers Marissa Resnick (Yanks) and Jessica Weingast (Rays) posted scoreless first innings. Resnick (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 3K, BB) also escaped the second unscathed, but the Yanks plated two in their half of the frame, all after Weingast fanned the first two batters. Amy Setton's single ignited the rally.

In the Yankee third, Ariel Strack crossed the plate just ahead of Sarah Zichlin's inning-ending tag play at third. That was the only run allowed by Devil Ray ace Julie Gold in her two innings of work, backed by Danielle Warren's two putouts at second base. Meanwhile, the Rays left the bases full in the third and fourth as Yankee hurlers Paige Johnson and Michelle Greenblatt allowed just one run each. After four, the Yanks were up 3-2.

The Rays took a 5-3 lead with three in the top of the fifth, highlighted by RBIs on Weingast's single and Jaclyn Steo's groundout. Erica Buki (2 IP, 1R, 2H, 4K, 2BB) came on for the six-out save, allowing just one run on Danielle Katz' fifth-inning walk. With two on and nobody out in the sixth, Katz struck out the top of the Devil Rays' order to keep the Yanks within one as they came up for last licks. But Buki retired them in order, fanning two and tossing to Denise Siegel at first for the last out.

On Sunday, the Rays defeated the Gloria Vanderbilt Cardinals at Jackson School to finish the season with an 8-5 record. Gold pitched a 1-2-3 third inning and Lauren Moskovic struck out the side in order in the fourth.
