By Melissa Klafter, a sixth grade SYAC softball player
I get up to the plate, I do my routine, tap the bat on the base 3 times slowly.
I look up at the pitcher
I take a good look at her and try to stare her down.
I take a practice swing. The bat then goes behind my head.
I get the zone.
Just me, the bat, and the ball.
I look for a sweet spot in the field.
I swing.... "STRIKE ONE"
I say to myself "it was just one pitch two more, come on."
I go back to the box and do my routine, tap the bat on the base three times slowly.
I look at the pitcher to stare her down,
All I want is for the bat to kiss the ball.
The ball does a dance in the air and lands right in the glove.
"STRIKE TWO"
I take a deep breath as if it were my last.
I feel sweat dripping down my head into my watering mouth.
I look at the pitcher.
I give her the evil eye.
I am determined for the ball to just hug the bat.
I put dirt on my hands to make a better grip,
She pitches.
The ball is going low,
Perfect for me to hit.
"This is going" I thought to myself I heard no "smooch" to the bat from the ball.
MISSION FAILED.
