I am writing on behalf of the Environmental Club of Syosset (ECOS). ECOS is a club that is involved with environmental issues going on around the world and in our own neighborhood as well. The goals of the club are to make students aware of environmental issues and to perform activities that will both clean and protect the environment.
Our first activity as ECOS involved surveying Stillwell Park to search for opportunities to protect and conserve the local environment. Club members walked the bike trails behind Stillwell Park and mapped out eroded areas. Unfortunately, we discovered that the erosion was too extensive for the club to repair at this time. Follow-up visits will be made in the spring to determine any changes in the erosion patterns along the trails.
During this visit we also discovered a tremendous amount of trash lining the fields and the parking area. We have made three visits to this site since the club surveyed the area. Groups of eight to 10 club members removed trash on Dec. 3 and 10, which resulted in the grass area being cleaned from litter. When the site was visited a third time on Jan. 28, members noticed new litter and proceeded to clean it up again. Periodically, we will be checking on the trash situation at Stillwell Park to see if more litter has accumulated.
We are currently looking for new environmental projects in which to become involved. We would like to make the community aware of the efforts that ECOS has made to make sure Syosset has a healthy and safe environment.
