This year's Salomon Smith Barney Nick Katsounis Memorial Wheelchair Championship Race was a major success for Long Island and for wheelchair athletics generally, and the lion's share of the credit goes to Salomon Smith Barney, acting through its New York Suburban regional office, based in Jericho. In recognition of its generosity, Salomon Smith Barney was awarded a special certificate by the Oyster Bay Town Board.

The Race, which was co-administered by the Town of Oyster Bay and the Greater Long Island Running Club, started and finished at Ellsworth Allen Town Park in Farmingdale, Long Island. Geraldine Walsh of the Running Club served as the race director. The 2001 race had special meaning for local wheelchair athletes, since it was dedicated to the memory of Nick Katsounis, the wheelchair athlete, coach and longtime director of the race who passed away this past January.
"We were thrilled to welcome Salomon Smith Barney back to the race this year," said Race Director Geraldine Walsh. "That firm is an outstanding corporate citizen that truly cares about programs for disabled athletes, and it is especially nice to be able to present them with this certificate from Town Supervisor John Venditto and the rest of the town board to honor them."
