On May 12, a picture perfect Saturday evening at Syosset-Woodbury Park, Max Rosenberg of the Yankees and Conor Tolkin of the Royals hooked up in a memorable pitcher's duel, with the Yankees ultimately prevailing 4-3. Both pitchers were outstanding, as Rosenberg gave up only seven hits and struck out 12 Royals, while Tolkin was just as dominant, giving up eight hits and striking out 10 Yankees. In addition to the outstanding pitching, the game will be just as memorable for all those in attendance for a fence clearing home run driven by Matt Checkla for the game's first run. The official statistician for the game estimated the home run as a 225-foot monster shot.

After the Checkla home run in the top of the second inning gave the Yankees the early lead, the Yankees increased their lead to 2-0 on a run scoring RBI by Adam Duchene (2 for 2, one RBI). Both pitchers then continued their dominance helped by outstanding defense by Brian Kahn at shortstop for the Royals and Matt Zagelbaum, for the Yankees, who caught a line drive to end a bases loaded threat in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Royals, however, tied the score in the bottom of the fifth. After loading the bases on a single by Nick Barilla (2 for 2) and two walks, the Royals were momentarily stifled on a double play started by Ben Davis. However, aggressive base running by Corey Holtzman and Kevin Choi tied the score 2-2, going into the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth, the Yankees strung together four hits in five at-bats to regain the lead 4-2, including an RBI single by Max Horowitz (1 for 2, one RBI) and the game-winning RBI by Ben Davis (2 for 3, one RBI). Rosenberg then went back on the mound for his last inning in the bottom of the sixth. After giving up a triple to Richie Allen (1 for 3, one RBI) scored Matt Tarasoff (2 for 3) to cut the lead to 4-3, Rosenberg got the last out with the tying run only 60 feet away to preserve the victory for the Yankees.

In addition to the outstanding pitching by Rosenberg and Tolkin and the mammoth home run by Checkla, both teams should be congratulated on a well-played game.
