Under the leadership of Dan Wohl, president of the Long Island Senior Softball Association, the organization has grown from a small group of four teams in the mid 1980s to its present 28 clubs. Made up of players 60 years and older, there are 16 teams in Nassau County and 12 in Suffolk.
Starting each May, all of the teams play a 64-game schedule. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning all clubs play two seven-inning games until the end of August. Fields maintained by various towns and the counties are utilized for the games. The 28 teams are divided into four divisions based on their previous years' record. At the end of the season, an additional tournament is played in September to identify four winners, one from each division.
Also, a traveling All-Star Team, in the 60, 65 and 70 year old age bracket was recently formed. These teams compete in national tournaments. Currently there are the New York Statesman 65s and the Long Island Tiger 70s who will be traveling to Baton Rouge, Detroit, Las Vegas and Planos, Texas to compete with the best teams in the country. In the past two years the Tigers have won the Gold at the Senior Olympics and the Senior Softball World Series last year in Detroit.
