All is certainly not right with the world, but it sure feels better at this time of year. The crisp autumn air tells us the holidays are approaching and that can only mean one thing; it's time to step back from our busy lives and take a moment for reflection.

A quick look at the world around us offers evidence that as citizens of this great country we have much to be thankful for.

In a world where countries are torn apart by war, we live in peace. In a world where hunger and disease claim the lives of children before they can take their first steps, we have the most advanced medical technologies and treatments available to man, and in a world where people cannot openly speak their minds without threat of violence, we enjoy our freedom.

Right here in Nassau County our beautiful parks and beaches provide testimony to the fact that we are truly blessed. We are rich in culture thanks to our museums and art galleries, and our history is alive through careful planning which has preserved many of this Island's estates, monuments and historic landmarks. We enjoy a strong economy which means jobs for our residents and incentives to attract and maintain business, and that provides stability for this county.

We can spend the day paddling down a river just a few miles from home, enjoy a stroll along any one of our bustling downtown areas, or seek out a market to purchase fruits and vegetables produced right here in this county.

Just a few miles to the west is the most magnificent city in the world, and a few more miles to the east lies one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in Montauk.

This is the place we call home and during the holiday season there is no greater calling than to return to the place that provides us with comfort, the place where we can embrace our loved ones and all those who enrich our lives. This annual ritual homeward is a gift not to be taken for granted, but surely worthy of thanks.

Personally, I would like to give special thanks for my loving husband, Sid, my wonderful children and my beautiful grandchildren. They have given me strength beyond all limits. I also want to give thanks for the strength and courage of my Democratic caucus over the past year as we work to set this county on the right track.
