Saturday, Sept. 16 marked the opening weekend for the inaugural season of the Jericho Youth Football League. The weather provided a clear, bright, sunny day for the historical event. The league, coordinated by Steve Brett and Jeff Falk, is the first of this type ever created in Jericho history for children between the ages of 7 and 12.

The players truly exhibited their efforts and sportsmanship.

The games were played at Jackson Elementary School from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. by age group. All the players looked very professional in their Jets jerseys, compliments of the NFL and Nike. The sidelines were filled with proud spectators cheering on and supporting the kids. The games were more of a "controlled scrimmage" type so that the children could get more familiar with the rules and regulations of flag football. The adult referees did a spectacular job keeping the players within the guidelines of the game while helping to create a fun, competitive environment and a great learning experience.
The coaches held one or two practices during the week introducing the fundamentals of football to the kids. The practices resulted in well-organized games on Saturday. A special "thanks" goes to the coaches and assistant coaches for dedicating their time and efforts to help make this a positive experience for all the children.
The season will run until Nov. 4, and due to the overwhelming response and positive feedback, sign-ups are continuing. At this time over 190 children have been registered to participate in the league. For further information, please contact Steve Brett, 978-9541 or Jeff Falk, 485-2729.
