There is a time and a place for privacy - An undeniable fact!
I thought deeply about this proposition as I traveled on the Long Island Expressway between Exits 35 and 36. There in all its brazenness on the central island, stood a lonely, blue outdoor toilet, which was not truly perpendicular to the ground.
I am sympathetic with all the hard working, brawny gentlemen in luminescent hard-hats and vests. I have seen them oft times munching on oversized hero sandwiches and drinking gallons of coffee and sodas from thermos bottles and liter containers. They work hard and they must have proper nutrition. I also know that nature's calls must be answered.
But on the middle island of the L.I.E.?!
With cranes and bulldozers and machines that look like dinosaurs in the vicinity, is there a possibility for privacy and a few relaxed moments? Those gargantuan vehicles with ugly claws that dig into the bowels of the earth surly can afford no peace for the weary.
The L.I.E. construction site has hundreds of orange barrels and orange cones. It is also very well policed. (My wife Lorraine got a ticket recently). It represents frenzy and the jarring of ones nervous system and certainly not privacy and relaxation.
Outdoor toilets were originally called "Heere's Johnny" by a manufacturer but a judge ruled against that name, when sued by Johnny Carson's Tonight Show." (I thought it was quite clever.)
As I drive by, I wondered, "Is that little blue house also available for commuters?"
Peace and quiet! What a great difficulty mankind has in finding these two precious commodities. We spend much money and time seeking relaxation and serenity. I am doubtful that the middle island of the under-construction Long Island Expressway is that unique place.
The Long Island Expressway is replete with many helpful green and white signs telling you where to go.
That less than perpendicular little blue house on the middle island is not one place I would like to go.
