The following is a public service notice from Recycle-A-Cycle, a local teen program that restores used bicycles for disadvantaged children.
At the height of the summer biking season, two companies are voluntarily recalling about 79,000 bicycle helmets after government regulators found the headgear failed safety tests. A third company is recalling about 2,200 trailers that are attached to bicycles to transport children.
Rand International of Farmingdale (800) 338-7677, is recalling about 70,000 helmets sold at Kmart stores between April of 1999 and March 2000 under the brand name "L.A. Crusin." The youth and adult-sized helmets are white or black and the child sizes are either yellow or pink. Cycle Express Inc. of New York (877) 714-6117 also is recalling about 9,000 bicycle helmets sold at Toys R Us between October 1999 and April 2000. The girls' helmets are mostly pink mixed with silver glitter and the pink part is bordered by purple tape. Decals on the helmets read "Hearts & Flowers." The helmets are size small, for ages two through five.
In addition, Burley Design (800)311-5294 is recalling about 2,200 Burley-BravoTM Bicycle Trailers, which are used to transport young children behind bikes. The wheel can separate from the trailers and result in crashes and injuries to children riding inside. The trailers in question were sold between Nov. 1999 and June 2000 by authorized Burley dealers and bicycle shops nationwide for about $350. They are marked with serial numbers 430-01-1 through 430-29-160, which can be found on a label on the underside of the aluminum frame next to the right wheel.
