Having to play three games in three nights, the Sluggers.com earned their spot on Thursday's league championship game, by averaging 15 runs in their three victories.
In their first round 17-6 win, Jessica Zalin knocked in six runs and Jillian Grecco gunned a runner out from right field, to end a fourth inning rally. Erica Youngerman continued her hot hitting, going 3-3 with three runs scored. Licia Avelar's brilliant play at second base, solidified the Sluggers' middle infield defense.
In the quarter finals, the Sluggers won convincingly, defeating the American League champions 9-4. Casey Roth had another dominating pitching performance, as she recorded 11 strikeouts and assisted on four other put outs at first base! Danielle Savarese played another flawless game at first. Madison Goldberg broke the game open in the fifth inning, with a two out, two run double down the right field line. Melissa Carter showed her versatility, playing all three outfield positions flawlessly.
The semifinals featured the Sluggers and Syosset Rocks, two teams which had split their earlier season meetings.
Despite jumping out to a 7-0 lead, thanks to clutch first inning hits from Laureen Hendell and Danielle Savarese, the Sluggers found themselves down 10-7 after four innings, as Brittany Bzezinski, Laureen Musiello and Sam Tully all had clutch base hits in the Rocks third and fourth inning rallies.
In the top of the fifth, with the bases loaded and the season on the line, Cassie Rotto, the Sluggers hot hitting cleanup batter, lined an opposite field two run double, to get the Sluggers even 10-10.
Casey Roth struck the side out in the bottom of the fifth and the Sluggers, showing pride and true teamwork, scored eight runs in the top of the sixth with every player either scoring or knocking in a run.
The Sluggers closed the door shut in the bottom of the inning, with Kim Oringer making a spectacular catch at third base to end the game as the Sluggers won 18-10.
