The Goldstein & Avrutine Yankees avenged their season opening loss by defeating the Midtown Electric Giants 6 - 3 on Monday at the Jackson School. The game was called after five innings due to darkness.
This was an extremely well played game by both teams. It featured great pitching with Lauren Klinghoffer on the mound for the Yankees and Hayley Katz throwing for the Giants. In addition both teams played great defense when it counted. This kept the game close and exciting.
The Yankees scored in the first three innings to take a 6 - 0 lead but Katz hung tough and shut them down for the rest of the game. Meanwhile Klinghoffer was untouchable for the first two innings, striking out five and only allowing four base runners. In the bottom of the third the Giants broke through for their first run. In the bottom of the fifth the Giants forced over two more runs but the Klinghoffer stayed focused and got the side for her first win of the year.
The Yankee offense was led by Danielle Seiden (2 - 3, one run, one RBI), Samantha Cardinale (2 - 3, two runs), Rachel Kashen (2 - 3, one run, one RBI) and Melanie Friedlander (2 - 3, one RBI). The Giants were powered by Rebecca Gold (3 - 3, two RBI's).
There were two great defensive plays during the game. In the fourth inning Rachel Klinghoffer lashed a line drive to right center. Jennifer Spivak chased it down and made a great throw to Sherry Greenberg who pegged the ball to Heather Bloomberg to nail Klinghoffer at third base. In the bottom of the frame Bloomberg cracked a long fly into left field. Melanie Friedlander made a tremendous throw to Rachel Klinghoffer who was able to put the tag on Bloomberg as she rounded second base.
