Jericho School District voters overwhelmingly approved the proposed 2000-2001 School Budget on Tuesday May 16. After a heavy voter turnout, the final tally for the budget was reported 1,131 yes and 338 no.
"I am extremely pleased with the results of this election," said Jericho Superintendent of schools Hank Grishman. "The residents of our community have once again sent us a message loud and clear that they value and support the high quality of our educational program and the safety of our children."
Other election results included the passage of a transportation proposition with 1,041 yes and 409 no. If this proposition did not pass, some students would have been forced to walk across such roads as 106/107, Jericho Turnpike and Brush Hollow Road.
The 2000-2001 proposed Jericho Public Library Budget passed with a vote of 1,197 yes and 266 no. Jericho Public Library trustee David H. Diamond was also elected in an uncontested election.
Two uncontested Jericho Board of Education seats will be filled by Hilari Cohen and Ira Checkla. The terms of two current members of the board of education, Hilari Cohen and Walter Cole, will expire on June 30 of this year. Cole is retiring after 18 years of dedicated service to the Jericho school community.
