As a resident of the Hamlet East, I am writing to express my concern over the possibility of the children in my neighborhood losing their elementary school bus services. It is incomprehensible that I would ever consider allowing my children to walk across Jericho Turnpike to get to school. I cannot imagine the safety and traffic issues that will occur as a result of the Hamlet East residents being forced to drive their children to school. I would like to urge all eligible voters of the Jericho School community to vote YES for the transportation proposition on the May 16 school budget vote.
This referendum will ensure that all children living 2200 feet or more from the school, thus encompassing the Hamlet East, will be eligible for busing. We are fortunate that our board of education has acknowledged the seriousness of this issue. They have examined the most reasonable and financially responsible solution and have supported the passing of this referendum. We, as a community, must show our support by going to the polls and voting. Voter turnout is the only way this proposition can be passed. All Jericho School District residents are affected by the safety and traffic concerns that surround this issue. Property values are also affected by this referendum. Like many people, I moved to Jericho for the school district. It is critical that we maintain the integrity of service and commitment to our community that is expected here.
