The Morrisons Pastry Angels evened their record at 2-2 by defeating the Sheft Kahn Giants in a terrifically played game on Friday evening, April 14, by the score of 3-1. The Angels had outstanding pitching performances from Alex Siegel who won his second game of the year, and David "Mariano" Fusco, who recorded a well deserved save. C.J. Tolkin pitched a complete game for the Giants and limited the Angels to only three runs on seven hits.
Siegel was brilliant in his four innings of work as he allowed only a double to Garett Goodman and a walk to Nicholas Barilla. He recorded seven strikeouts and also assisted on five putouts. The game began rather spectacularly as John Goldsmith led off with a single for the Angels. The next three batters hit sharp grounders to Evan Shusterhoff at third base who threw to shortstop Josh Weiss covering second to force out each of the runners. The Angels broke through for a run in the top of the second as Josh Morey singled, stole second and third, and was driven home on Adam Kronengold's single. William Hahn and Brett Novick walked, but Tolkin escaped further damage on yet another force play which ended the bases loaded threat.
While Siegel continued to mow down the Giants, the Angels padded their lead with another two runs in the third inning. Ben Kriegel was hit by a pitch and then stole second. Ryan Saunders knocked Kriegel in with a sharp single. Brian Harris and Siegel then had consecutive infield singles as Saunders scored the final run. David Fusco came on in the fourth inning to relieve Siegel and yielded only one run in his two innings of work. Tolkin singled, stole second and third and was driven in by a sharp grounder to first by Tony DeIngeniis. Brian Kahn then worked out a walk and promptly stole second and third base. Kahn was thinking about stealing home and got caught in a rundown. In the turning point of the game, Angels' catcher Brian Harris threw out Kahn in a "one and done" rundown. Fusco struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth to preserve the win. (Record: 2-2).
