The issue of youth violence is one that cannot be ignored. We must all work together to do what is necessary to ensure the safety of our youth and put a stop to senseless violence, both inside and outside of the classroom. Nassau County's ongoing effort to reduce incidents of youth violence in our community is the creation of the Nassau County Youth Violence Task Force.

The Nassau County Youth Violence Task Force's mission is one of service to youth and families in the prevention of violence, substance abuse and antisocial behavior. The 10 member task force is comprised of representatives from local governments, schools and communities, all of whom share this common goal. These highly skilled professionals bring together immeasurable years of expertise from various fields pertinent to this issue. The task force will develop and formulate policy recommendations by conducting research and fact-finding on issues of violence, including school safety, youth gangs, violence against youth, child abuse and internet based abuse of children.

The issue of youth violence is a complex societal problem and the task force will encourage input from a variety of sources. The task force will foster and enhance practical partnerships between the various public and private entities involved, so that practical recommendations are produced.

The safety of our youth is of utmost concern to me. Today's youth are the leaders of tomorrow and I am committed to take whatever measures possible to protect them and prevent them from living in fear of violence. The Nassau County Youth Violence Task Force will strive to develop contemporary solutions and strategies to deal with the ever changing concerns we are faced with today. This united effort will work to rid society of the influences that lead to violence and other negative behaviors, so that the children of Nassau County can learn and grow in the safest environment possible.
