Jericho Resident Robert Abrams has recently co-authored a book entitled Boomer Basics: Everything That You Need to Know About the Issues Facing You, Your Children and Your Parents. This book, which hit bookstores late last month, is a resource bible written by baby boomers for baby boomers. The book deals with health, financial and personal issues, according to Abrams and his three co-authors Walter Burke, Timothy Casserly and Barbara Nodiff.

Abrams along with his family and inspiration behind his new book.

The term baby boom generation has been coined to describe the approximately 78 million people born between 1946 and 1964 in an environment of post-World War II optimism and economic growth, according to the introduction of the book.

"My colleagues and I came up with the idea for this book several years ago," said Abrams. "What makes this book special is that it deals with a variety of issues that people of the baby boomer generation are facing which not only affect themselves, but also their parents and children. The purpose of the book is to celebrate families."

Abrams resides in Jericho along with his wife Linda and two daughters who are enrolled in the Syosset School District. Dana attends South Woods Middle School and Tracey is a student at Robbins Lane Elementary School.

"I have worked closely with my co-workers for the last several years. We talked about the issues that affect baby boomers and we also spoke with professional colleagues and advisors for advice," said Abrams. "We all have different areas of specialty so it was completely a group project."

The book, which was published by McGraw-Hill, has taken the authors several years to produce as they all have full-time jobs and would meet whenever it was convenient for everyone involved. Not fitting to the typical reference book style, this book adds humor as well as insight, according to those who have read the book.

Each chapter within the book provides in-depth information from government, nonprofit and proprietary organizations, which the authors have reviewed for accuracy and content. The book identifies approximately 500 organizations that provide service, assistance and information to family members and, besides the off-line resources, the authors have also provided on-line resources as well.

"We are in the process of continuing to develop our website [that coincides with the book]," said Abrams. "We plan to have a world-class website so when people need answers to questions that affect their lives, they can come to our site and we will be able to direct them to the information that they need," Abrams continued.

"This book covers so many broad topics as there are so many topics that affect our lives. Within each area, we found that there are literally hundreds of sub-topics," said Abrams. "This is an evolving project so there will always be more for us to work on."

The website contains some information that the book has, but the information is constantly evolving. The website is not just a replica of the book. In the near future there will be a place on the website where the authors can communicate with their readers and respond to their questions and issues.

"The book is a starting place, but when a reader goes to the website, he is able to get more and more information as it is updated practically on a daily basis," said Abrams.

"It has been a privilege for me to work with the number of people who have helped to come up with the finished product," said Abrams. "The biggest compliment for all of us as far as the book and website go is when people let us know that we helped them. That is the reason that we did this and it is really exciting," continued Abrams.

Abrams is a partner in the law firm of Abrams, Fensterman, Fensterman and Flowers, LLT, based in Lake Success, NY, which provides legal services including health law, elder law, guardianship law, estate planning and administration, and related litigation and business matters.

Abrams serves on a number of professional, community, advocacy and public interest organizations. In 1995, the governor of New York personally selected Abrams to serve as a New York State delegate to the White House Conference on Aging, where he recommended national policy initiatives that were ultimately presented to the president and Congress. Additionally, he is an active member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, American Health Lawyers Association and the New York State Bar Association.

Abrams holds his master's degree in public administration from New York University in addition to his law degree and is also a licensed nursing home administrator.

"We hope that people purchase the book and use the web as a valuable resource," said Abrams. The book is available at all major bookstores now and on-line at amazon.com. The official website can be reached at www.boomerbasics.com.
