Syosset's Varsity Chess Team currently holds an impressive 4-0 record, including one match with a perfect 45-0 score. With a strong, well-balanced team of one sophomore, two juniors and three seniors, Syosset strives to regain its long lost title of Champions of the Nassau County Interscholastic Chess League during the upcoming playoffs.
As part of the chess league's activities, organized by senior Jason Idelson, NCICL's commissioner, Syosset's chess team had the opportunity to partake in a simultaneous exhibition with Master Mark Ritter at Garden City High School. There the master focused on teaching a little history of the game of chess, and how it evolved from the king's pawn openings and the race for central control to the current hypermodern used by renowned Master Robert Fischer himself. Afterwards, the chess league's present members played the master in a full-length simultaneous exhibition, gaining valuable experience and knowledge from an outstanding and talented chess player.
Syosset recently hosted Master Mark Ritter for a second chess league lecture and simultaneous exhibition in the high school library. The turnout was impressive with over 30 students and faculty members from Massapequa, Freeport, Chaminade and Syosset High Schools. Our own sophomore, Steven Gao, was the only person to attain a draw with Ritter, an outcome we should like to see repeated again!
