The Jericho Jaspers Girls U-11 soccer team won its division in the HBC Labor Day Tournament, going undefeated with two ties (3-0-2).
The Jaspers' offense was sparked by Alanna Herling, Kim Feigenbaum, Lauren Goldstein, Jaime Bernstein and Brienne Kugler, all of whom scored goals.
Herling kicked the game-winning goal in the first game and the tying goals in games two and four. Feigenbaum's speed and hustle gave the Jaspers a lot of shots-on-goal opportunities. Bernstein, Goldstein and Carly Berg controlled the midfield and were instrumental to their team's success. Berg also had a key assist on Kugler's goal in the win that assured first place.
Tracy Sweetbaum, Jessica Parr, Erica Simon and Heather Bloomberg led the defense, which only allowed four goals in five games. Parr and Simon's toughness and speed smothered the opposing team's offense and limited the shots on goal.
Bloomberg and Sweetbaum also contributed offensively, the former scoring a goal in the team's second win and the latter getting an assist on Goldstein's goal in the last game.
The Jaspers had great goaltending from Cassidy Tichner and Sherry Greenberg, who combined for two shutouts. Tichner and Greenberg also contributed to the team's strong midfield play.
The girls showed great spirit and they should be congratulated for playing hard and giving their best effort each and every game. A special sportsmanship award for the entire tournament was given to Tracy Sweetbaum and Kim Feigenbaum. The Jaspers are looking forward to their opening game September 18.
