Middendorf joined Company #4 of the Syosset Fire Department in July 1948, holding the rank of second lieutenant from 1954-55, first lieutenant from 1955-56 and captain from 1956-58. Thomas also joined Company #4 in October of 1948, and served as first lieutenant from 1981-86 and captain from 1986-89. Both men currently hold the rank of honorary chief.
Middendorf and Thomas belong to many organizations within the fire service. They both became members of the Syosset Fire Department racing team, known as the Syosset Nightraiders. Having raced in many tournaments themselves, they continue to play a major role in the competitions by instructing and assisting newer team members.
The officers and members of Emergency Engine Company #4 recently thanked the two 50-year members for their devotion to the fire department. "Especially on a company level, they are very outstanding and attend all drills [and] meetings, and offer their knowledge to anyone," said a fire department press release. "These men still give a lot to the citizens of the Syosset Fire District."
Middendorf and Thomas were honored at the Department Installation Dinner in May 1999. County Executive Thomas S. Gulotta and Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto presented awards to the two members for their outstanding service to the community.
