On Opening Day 1999 for the Jericho Athletic Association, the Gilbert Display Mets defeated the Harry Katz Carpet Cardinals in a fourth-grade boys baseball game by a score of 22-7.
The April 17 game started off as a pitcher's duel as the Cardinals Opening Day starter, Daniel Witteck, and starter for the Mets, Kyle Viera, were not scored upon until the bottom of the second, when the Cardinals scored on four walks and a hit batter to take a 2-0 lead.
The Mets finally got to Witteck in the top of the third inning by scoring five times. The inning included an RBI triple by Joey Stabile (2 for 3, three RBIs), an RBI from Brandon Schwartz and a double by Eric Singer (2 for 5, three RBIs).
However, the Cardinals tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the third inning on a double by Josh Lampet (1 for 1, two RBIs, two BB). But the Mets took the lead for good by scoring seven runs in the fourth and 10 more runs in the fifth.
Key hits for the Mets were from Anthony Stabile (3 for 5, three RBIs) and Ben Davis (2 for 4, three RBIs). Nicholas Barilla came in the game for the Mets in the third inning and walked only two batters the rest of the way in earning the win. The Mets received excellent defense, especially from Singer, who had an unassisted double play to get the Mets out of a jam in the bottom of the third inning.
The Cardinals received solid pitching from relievers Harrison Katz, Michael Chenkin and Thomas D'Eri. Spencer Greenberg had a home run in the fifth inning for the Cardinals' last run of the game.
