Developing positive intercultural relations with other countries can be assisted by the efforts of people at the 'grass roots' community level. Syosset International has in the past been successful in establishing leadership for the promotion of humanitarian causes. This has contributed to feelings of friendship and understanding among people of all cultures. Community donations for the relief of suffering people, both in our own country and abroad, have been contributed with love and compassion, thus continuing our reputation as a caring and sharing community.

We now have another opportunity to extend a willingness to assist, and to express our feelings of compassion, for Sang Lan, the 17-year-old Chinese gymnast, who suffered severe injuries during last year's Nassau County's Goodwill Games. She now remains paralyzed and is undergoing therapy in New York City.

Sang Lan's courage and determination to recover from the tragedy in her young life has amazed, impressed, and inspired everyone. She has gained the love and respect of countless Americans who cheer her on with a deluge of donations, cards, letters, and prayers for her recovery. She in turn has been overwhelmed by the love and support of the American people. Her feelings of gratitude and appreciation are shared by the people of China who have recognized the good will of Americans toward one of their own.

I have volunteered my service for Sang Lan by assuming the tremendous task of responding to the thousands of wonderful people who have written to her from all over the world and who have contributed funds to assist her and her family with their medical expenses. I assist Sang Lan because she is such a remarkable young lady, who projects courage and great determination in facing the overwhelming odds and severe challenge of recovery, who loves the American people, and who shares my goal of creating positive Chinese-American relations.

I will be most grateful if you will consider extending your love and assistance on behalf of Sang Lan. Your donations will not only assist a most courageous and remarkable young woman but will contribute to good will, friendship, and understanding between the people of China and the United States. By so doing, you will be contributing significantly to 'grass roots diplomacy' at the community level.

Your consideration and efforts on behalf of Sang Lan will be deeply appreciated. Checks should be made payable to the Sang Lan Goodwill Fund and mailed to Bill Kupec, at 29 Narcissus Drive, Syosset, NY 11791. The total donation will be sent with love and encouragement from our community and will note individual donors.

Thank you for your considerate assistance. It will be deeply appreciated.

Bill Kupec
