The Syosset High School Girls Varsity Basketball team has begun its season on quite an impressive note, winning the Syosset Tournament two weeks ago, and the Port Washington Tournament last weekend. Under the leadership of Head Coach Diane Alleva and Senior Co-Captains Rachel Friedman and Mary McCue, the Lady Braves have taken the lead in every game, and have not looked back.

In the Syosset Tournament, the Lady Braves defeated North Shore in the first round 56 to 28. In a game dominated by the Braves, junior Lindsay Klimkowski led the attack with 15 points and 11 rebounds, followed up by senior McCue with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Friedman added nine 9 points and sophomore Erin Connolly tallied 8 points. The next day, the Braves took on Division, and once again crushed the competition by a score of 56-32 to win the tournament. The Braves were led by Connolly who had 12 points, two of which were 3-pointers, Kimkowski, who had 10 points and 6 assists, and junior Allison Hoyt who contributed 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Riding on the momentum generated by the impressive wins, the Braves traveled to Port Washington to play the Sewanhaka Indians in what looked to be a challenging game. The Braves, however, came out strong, shutting down the Indians with their man-to-man defense. Once again, leading the Braves was Connolly, who had five 3-pointers.
In the finals, the Braves beat the Port Washington Vikings 55-45. Leading the Braves was Connolly (16 points), Allison Hoyt (14 points) and McCue (8 points). Connolly was named tournament MVP, and McCue was named to the tournament All-Star team.
Although the Braves made the wins look easy, the Braves will have a difficult season, playing powerhouses Massapequa, Farmingdale and Freeport. The Braves first home game is Wednesday, Jan. 6 against East Meadow at 6:15 p.m.
