A public hearing was held at South Woods Middle School, during the regular Syosset Board of Education meeting on June 15 concerning the proposed appropriation of $212,720 for the district's repair reserve fund, which the board voted to approve.
The repair reserve fund was set up one year ago to set aside funds for the repair and restoration of facilities in the district. Presently, there is $495,515.59 in the repair reserve fund. The proposal calls for $212,720 worth of projects.
The projects include
* All elementary schools: Blacktopping the play areas.
* South Grove Elementary: Sanding and relining the stage floor and gym.
* South Grove Annex (a separate building for the kindergartners): Window and door replacement.
* Village Elementary: Laying down blacktop.
* Willits Elementary: Replacing some of the portables' carpeting with tiles...sanding and relining the gym floor.
* South Woods Middle School: Updating the stage lighting...installing a magnetic door holder in the cafeteria...resurfacing the tables in the science room.
* H. B. Thompson Middle School: Removing an office wall.
* Syosset High School: Completing renovations for the Little Theater...replacing water fountains...resealing the radio station...replacing the lighting in the Guidance Resource Center...adding four new volleyball courts in the main gym...renovating storage areas in two of the art rooms.
* Districtwide: Replacing torn carpeting.
In new business, the board voted to approve 26 resolutions, concerning staff appointments, transfers, reassignments, resignations and retirements.
In addition, compensation was decided upon for the administrative staff and other personnel.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carole Hankin will receive a salary of $171,188. She will be paid for up to five unused vacation days, her Extended Benefits Allowance (EBA) will be raised to $3,000, and her 403k plan will be increased by $500. Hankin's contract was extended an additional year, to June 30, 2003.
Dr. Jeffrey B. Streitman, deputy superintendent of schools, will receive $151,460, plus a 403K plan of $5,000. Dr. Robert Sarrel, director for Business Operations, will receive $106,527, plus an increase in EBA of $2,500. Richard Miller, director of Pupil Personnel Services, will get $115, 825. Patricia L. Galaskas, elementary curriculum coordinator, will receive $88,751 in compensation, with an EBA of $2,500.
The board ratified the extension of the current collective bargaining agreement between the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) and the school district. The agreement provides for a 3 percent increase in salary for the 1998-99 school year, a 2.75 percent increase for the first half of the 1999-2000 school year, a 3.25 percent increase in the second half of the 1999-2000 school year, and a 3 percent increase in the 2000-2001 school year. Compensation for employees not part of the bargaining unit was also approved, as well as compensation for non-teaching supervisory personnel and confidential secretaries.
The next meeting of the Syosset Board of Education will be held on Wednesday, July 1 at 7:30 p.m. at South Woods Middle School. It will be a reorganizational meeting to re-install the board members who won the recent district election, and to vote for the president and vice president of the board.
