The Tornadoes boys U12 travel soccer team enjoyed the Memorial Day weekend holiday in New England. The Tornadoes were invited to play in the Memorial Day Framingham Sportsmanship Classic in Massachusetts and were primed for the tough Division 1 and 2 competition.
The team was brilliant in its soccer play. Game 1 vs. Dedham Orca was a tug-of-war, but Syosset was victorious, 1-0. Striker Eugene Haas scored the lone goal. Steven Finkelstein played a superb game in the goal. Defensive play from Brandon Hill, Bobby Goulding, Matt Wachler and Eric Sherb was outstanding. Strong support at midfield by Stephen Polito, Scott Strauss, Brian Webb, Jared Vuernick, Robb Kalkstein, John Alaimo and Alex Stein aided the team's offensive drives all tournament. Marcello Catania and Scott Strauss, the team's other striker and goalie, also scored a goal each during the tournament.
Game 2 vs. West Springfield West Side Hawks was a Syosset Tornado 2-1 victory.
Game 3 was a big victory against another team from Long Island. Syosset pounced on the New Hyde Park Bengals 3-0. With that win the Tornadoes clinched the #1 seed in the U12 division.
On to the semi-finals! Syosset met its match in a strong team from Manchester, NH. It was a tough game, with Syosset taking an early lead of 1-0 on a 20-yard shot from Stephen Polito, but Manchester answered late in the first half with a goal of their own, tying the game at the half. In the second half the Tornadoes looked a bit sluggish and the Manchester team took advantage of that. They scored twice more. With three minutes to go in the game the Tornadoes answered back with one more goal by Bobby Goulding. The Tornadoes seemed to get a second wind but could not score a third goal to tie. As the whistle blew the Tornadoes' chance for the gold was gone. The team had an outstanding tournament and have every reason to feel proud.
