I am running for the Syosset Board of Education. I have been a resident of Syosset for 12 years and have one daughter in middle school. I believe that our present school board needs independent voices and I pledge to be that independent voice.
The use of whole language in our elementary schools in the early years according to recent research should incorporate the use of phonics. Presently our young students are taught the whole language method with limited use of phonics. It has been argued that our students do well on the standardized tests, but the recent report card from New York State does not place our school district in the top ten from all districts on Long Island. Maybe if phonics were used more extensively, our district would have a higher ranking among the schools on Long Island.
As an educator for the last 20 years I can provide guidance and leadership to the present board members. My background has provided me with insight into what all students need to be prepared for the new standards.
If elected I will listen to the concerns of all parents in the community. As a board member I pledge to represent all the residents of this community.
I ask that the people of this community support my fellow challengers Dr. Suresh Joshi and Russell Slanover for independent voices on the Syosset School Board.
