History was made last Saturday, April 18 at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park as the St. Edward Monarchs defeated Our Lady of Mercy by a score of 19 to 5 in their inaugural game in the 8th grade division of the CYO of Nassau-Suffolk travel baseball league. St. Edward CYO President Bob Neuendorf was on hand to throw out the first ball and the Monarchs took charge.
Michael Reens was brilliant on the mound as he tossed three no-hit innings for St. Edward to record the team's first win. Patrick Benjamin pitched magnificently in the middle innings and Alex Regruto recorded St. Edward's first save after thrilling the crowd with an incredible double play at shortstop. David Long went the distance behind the plate for the Monarchs and had a key triple. Danny Nawrocki went 4 for 4 at the plate, while recording the Monarchs' first hit and first RBI. Schuyler Saltiel, Paul Genovese and Jimmy Kursar all had long doubles which knocked in six runs for the Monarchs.
Perhaps the biggest strength was St. Edward's defense, which was sparked by some heads-up plays by infielders Chris Sulfaro, Chris Swann and Andrew Hovance. All in all, it was a solid team effort and a preview of what should be a very rewarding season for the St. Edward Monarchs.
