The fundraiser is named in memory of Jodi Shapiro, a Special Education Administrator for Manhasset Schools. On July 13, 2013, Ms. Shapiro passed away at the age of 39 after a brief and sudden battle with cancer. Ms. Shapiro was named Assistant Director of Committees on Preschool Special Education and Elementary Special Education in June 2012. She implemented special education programs and services for children in preschool through sixth grade at Shelter Rock, Munsey Park, Our Lady of Grace, and St. Mary’s elementary schools in Manhasset. The event will feature auctions, a 50/50 raffle, a hot wing eating contest, and live music. Tickets are $35 per person and $10 for children. The ticket price includes food. A cash bar will also be available. Donations and raffle items are currently being accepted. Proceeds from the event will go to benefit Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, with a fundraising goal of $10,000. A Syosset surgeon has become the first in the United States to present findings from a clinical trial on a combined bariatric approach to enhance weight loss that involves implanting a Lap Band and performing surgery on the stomach.
Plication, or surgery to fold the outer curve of the stomach into a pleat, is new in its application to bariatric surgeries. For decades, the procedure was used to treat perforated ulcers or stomach trauma.

On Nov. 7, more than 150 supporters gathered for MercyFirst’s Annual Harvest Ball held at The Garden City Hotel, raising more than $100,000 to help fund MercyFirst’s programs.
This year, the 2013 MercyFirst Community Partner Honoree Awards went to three Syosset-Woodbury families: The Millers, The Cliffords and The Majoys.

Jericho Celeste Taub, 13, showed that she could run with the big girls (and the big boys!) on Sunday, Nov. 17, as she scored a decisive victory in the Women’s Division of the 5th annual Blue Ribbon Run for Prostate Cancer, a 5-kilometer road race that started and finished at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park.
Taub finished the Run in 20 minutes, 17 seconds, 53 seconds in front of 36-year-old runner-up Kelly Bregou of New York City.
