Art Gallery: Fabric Artist, Louise Sharakan

Louise began as a fabric artist, painting on silk. Later on, she incorporated these silk fabrics into mandalas. Beads, crystals and her found rusty objects danced on the silk and made their own statement. She has been exhibiting every year since 1985 in libraries, art galleries, museums and universities, www.louisesharakan.com. Louise Sharakan’s Mandalas will be exhibited in the Syosset Public Library’s art gallery from August 4 to 25 during library hours. COPE, a grief and healing organization dedicated to supporting parents and families living with the loss of a child, holds free weekly support groups. The Searching Spirit Series

Midway Jewish Center, 330 S. Oyster Bay Rd., Syosset, and its senior rabbi, Rafi Rank, invites the community to a lecture/discussion/meditation series for people in search of faith or resolved to strengthen their own faith. The series, scheduled for Mondays from noon to 1 p.m., will explore both the weaknesses and strengths of the human spirit. In a welcoming and judgment-free space, the series will offer exercises on how to deepen and expand humanity by delving into the logic of relationships, the multiple purposes of life, the control exerted over emotional/sexual selves and the personalities too often hidden for fear of how others may respond. The series, though built on Judaism’s 3500 year tradition of wisdom, is open to everyone in the community and free. Bring a veggie lunch and the synagogue will provide coffee and nosh.

Miscarriage Support Group

A safe, confidential, supportive environment to talk about what you have been through, reactions and feelings and how to move forward. You are not alone. Facilitated by a professional therapist. Free Veterinary Lectures

Once a month beginning in September through December. Long Island Cat Fanciers sponsors free lectures given by top local veterinarians on topics relevant to dog and cat owners. Muttontown Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

The Fellowship provides an atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie, with talks presented by intelligent, enlightening and non-dogmatic speakers who come from the entire spectrum of the arts, history and sciences. Program For Women with Breast Cancer

The F.E.G.S LI Division Breast Cancer Program announces “Lend a Helping Hand,” a program of services for women with breast cancer. For individuals, newly diagnosed, and those undergoing treatment, for whom the cancer has caused emotional stress or difficulty in managing ongoing family and household commitments. Free services, provided by specially trained volunteers, many of them breast cancer survivors themselves, include: emotional support and companionship, light housekeeping, food shopping, light meal preparation, grooming assistance, running errands. Earthwalk

Conducted by the staff of Starflower Experiences on the first Sunday of every other month at 2 p.m. A light touch of nature on an unusual and enjoyable walk. Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery

Is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (weekends, Memorial Day through Labor Day until 7 p.m.) and is located on the south side of Route 25A on the Nassau-Suffolk border. For information call 692-6768. Weekend trout feeding at 1 and 3 p.m. General admission $5 for adults; $3 children 3 to 17 and people over 65. Call for group tour information. Group programs will be held on selected Saturdays at 10 or 11 a.m. A reservation must be made in advance. Fish feeding demonstrations are held every Saturday and Sunday. The public is invited to observe a staff member feeding thousands of trout at 1 and 3 p.m. Summer programs are offered for youngsters who will be entering kindergarten in September up to children who are entering grade seven. Features NYS’s largest collection of fresh water fish housed in two aquarium buildings, six outdoor ponds, where brook, brown and rainbow trout are raised and sold to enthusiasts who use them to stock their ponds. In addition to the trout ponds, the Hatchery also maintains a warm water fish pond and a turtle pond. Catch and Keep Trout Fishing is a recent addition to Hatchery activities.

Are you a senior who would like help paying for your Medicare benefits and prescription drugs? Free assistance is only a phone call away if you qualify for extra help because of limited income. There may be a way to alleviate some of the cost of Medicare – deductibles and coinsurance, Part B premiums, prescription drug plans (Part D). Reducing monthly premiums, annual deductibles and co-payments, aiding with coverage gaps (the doughnut hole). Rabbi Shmuel Lipszyc will hold half-hour sessions every Saturday at 9 a.m. with informative commentary and insight about deeply rooted Jewish rituals that provides an opportunity for Jews throughout the community to explore how Jewish customs and traditions came about. Rather than robotically following rituals and traditions, Jews now can take action to make their spiritual experience more meaningful and fulfilling.

•Modern Day Kabbalah Experience with renowned speaker Rabbi Shmuel Lipszyc. Probe the Depths of the Kabbalah in 30 minutes! Participate in our weekly Shabbat classes. No previous background or religious affiliation required. All welcome. Shabbat mornings from 9 to 9:30 a.m.

•A Woman’s Voice. Discover the answers to life’s deepest and most complex issues. Realize the amazing power that G-d bestowed upon women. Add more meaning to your life. Live a happier life. Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services

Located at 950 South Oyster Bay Rd., Hicksville. The following programs are offered:

•The Community Program has a group for senior citizens. The Golden Years? The group is open to all people over 60 who are dealing with issues related to drugs or alcohol. This is an opportunity to talk confidentially with your peers as well as having the support and guidance of a skilled professional. Medicare and most other insurances are accepted. The Community Program is also a NYS DMV approved facility. For information about this or any other services call 822-4060.

•A support group for those who have family members with mental illness meets Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. A nominal fee is charged. Therapeutic and supportive services to people hampered in their functioning by mental illness, psychological difficulties and/or substance abuse and addiction problems is provided. Among its services, the agency provides outpatient mental health services for children and adults living in Nassau County. The staff is comprised of psychiatrists, registered nurses and certified social workers. Call 822-6111.

•An outpatient substance abuse agency offering a Parenting Group. This group specializes in parenting issues for substance abusers. While drug use among teens has declined in other parts of the country, it continues to rise here in Nassau County. For information on this group as well as other services, call 822-4060. •Women’s Domestic Issues group provides support and education to women experiencing domestic conflict, child abuse, substance abuse and related issues. The focus will be on education, support as well as empowerment and proactive behavior. Issues related to the family and the legal system will be addressed. Preregistration required. Call 822-4060.

•Young Adult Drug Addiction Group for those who are recovering from drug addiction. The goals are to enhance skills, increase self-awareness and work toward a drug and alcohol free life. Call 822-4060. All inquiries are confidential.

•Volunteers are needed by Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services to help staff the Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The volunteers help raise much needed funds for the agency so that mental health and substance abuse programs can continue to be provided to the residents of Hicksville and the surrounding communities. •An Anger Management program led by a social worker from the agency’s Community Program is open to adults 17 and older. The course is geared to individuals who have unhealthy expressions of anger and need to learn how to manage anger; stop violence or the threat of violence; and develop self-control over thoughts and actions. Course attendees will receive positive support and feedback from others. Additionally, help will be provided to identify triggers, recognize cues to anger and develop individual anger management strategies. The fee for this course is $200. Central Nassau accepts Medicaid as well as several credit cards. Advanced registration is required and reservations can be made by calling 822-4060.
