The Roslyn High School girls basketball team continued their winning ways, while the boys squad ran into a rough patch as both teams head into the home stretch of the 2009-2010 season.
Fresh off their big win against Locust Valley, the Lady Bulldogs followed that up with wins over North Shore and Seaford, before falling to conference leader Roosevelt.
Playing at home, Roslyn got off to an 18-9 first quarter lead against North Shore and steadily built on that advantage in the second half for a solid 72-64 win. In this high-scoring contest, Stefanie Klapper had a huge game, scoring 29 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Nina Hadzibabic, Ashley Levy, and Samantha Richman also scored in double digits.
On Jan. 14, Roslyn had a sensational second half as they scored a convincing 45-36 road win over Seaford. Trailing 21-9 at halftime, the Lady Bulldogs got their mighty offense in gear in the second half, outscoring Seaford 20-7 in the third quarter and 16-8 in the final frame. Stefanie Klapper led the well-balanced Roslyn attack with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Nina Hadzibabic had 15 points and Ashley Levy had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Roslyn’s winning streak came to an end in a home game against Roosevelt, as they fell short to Conference ABC-II’s top rated squad, 57-43. The Lady Bulldogs got off to a 9-7 first quarter lead and managed to stay close into the third quarter, before falling behind. Nina Hadzibabic, Stefanie Klapper, and Samantha Richman all scored in double digits. After the Roosevelt game, Roslyn is 8-4 overall and second in conference play with a 4-3 mark.
On Wednesday, Jan. 20, Roslyn played a home game against Oyster Bay. On Jan. 22 and 29, the Lady Bulldogs travel to, respectively, Westbury and Locust Valley for road contests. They return home on Feb. 5 for a game against North Shore before traveling to Seaford on Feb. 8 for the final regular season contest.
Following their two-point win over Jericho on Jan. 5, the boys basketball squad scored another exciting win, this one a 56-53 road win over Lynbrook. However, the Bulldogs ran into a rough spot, losing away games at Manhasset, 65-59 and at Malverne, 64-51. After trailing 18-10 in the Manhasset game, the Bulldogs came back to tie the game at halftime. However, Manhasset pulled away in the third quarter for the win. Jordan Richman had another good game, scoring 21 points in the losing effort.
In the game against Malverne, Roslyn pulled out to an impressive 18-9 first quarter lead, only to see Malverne pull ahead at halftime and hold onto that lead. Nick Hadzibabic was the lone Bulldog to score in double digits.
Now sporting a 6-5 overall and 3-2 conference record, the Bulldogs hosted Valley Stream on Jan. 19. This Friday, they host Jericho in a 7:00 p.m. home game, before closing the regular season with a Jan. 29 game against Lynbrook, a Feb. 2 game against Manhasset, a Feb. 5 contest against Malverne and a Feb. 8 home game against Valley Stream South.
