Last year, the Roslyn Bulldogs enjoyed one of the most successful basketball seasons in the school’s history, winning their first ever Nassau County ABC-I championship.
With star guard George Beamon graduating and now entering Manhattan College on a basketball scholarship, the Bulldogs have started the season with a new lineup. After losing a close opening game to Elmont, the Bulldogs bounced back to defeat Glen Cove, 65-61 in a Dec. 8 home game.
In between, the Bulldogs fell to both North Shore and Massapequa, but on Dec. 15, the Bulldogs bounced back with another impressive win, toppling Lawrence, 59-53. In the win over Lawrence, Nick Hadzibabic scored 16 points, while Andrew Wolfe and Tom Gloznek each had 13 points. Gloznek also contributed seven assists. Sam Greenwald starred on defense with nine rebounds. Roslyn outscored Lawrence 19-10 in the third quarter to help put the game away, as they withstood a last quarter charge by their rivals.
The winning streak continued on Dec. 17 as the Bulldogs won a home game over St. Dominic’s, 56-49. The game was tied at halftime, but Roslyn inched out to a two-point heading into the final quarter, where they outscored St. Dominic’s 20-15 to seal the win.
Sam Greenwald paced the scoring attack with 16 points, followed by Nick Hadzibabic who had 15 points, with six of them coming from the free throw line. Tom Gloznek scored 12 points, a total that included two 3-pointers. Greenwald’s point total represented a career high. Fourteen of his 16 points came in the second half, when the Bulldogs began to pull away from their rivals. Hadzibabic’s evening included 14 rebounds, while Gloznek continued to shine at point guard, handing out seven assists, the same total as in the win over Lawrence.
In the win over Glen Cove, Hadzibabic led the well-balanced scoring attack with 21 points. Andrew Wolfe (15), Adam Carmichael (14), and Tom Gloznek (10) also scored in double digits.
Carmichael has paced the Bulldog attack in other games, scoring 17 points against Elmont, 21 against North Shore, and 19 in a loss to Massapequa. Andrew Wolfe has also connected for double digits in several of the Bulldogs’ early contests.
On Jan. 5, the Bulldogs will entertain Jericho, before heading off for three straight road games: Jan. 8 at Lynbrook, Jan. 12 at Manhasset, and Jan. 15 at Malverne.
The girls’ squad, meanwhile, is off to a particularly strong start. The Lady Bulldogs reeled off healthy wins over East Meadow, Manhasset, and St. Dominic before losing away-games to both Farmingdale and Roosevelt. On Dec. 18, the Lady Bulldogs were back on the winning track with an impressive 59-49 home win over Oyster Bay.
Stephanie Klapper and Ashley Levy have sparked Roslyn all throughout the team’s fast start. Klapper had 21 points and 10 rebounds in an exciting 52-49 Dec. 5 home win over Manhasset. Levy had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Samantha Richman chipped in with 10 points. In a solid 50-31 win over St. Dominic, Klapper again had a double-double game, scoring 14 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Levy had 12 points in the win. Finally, in the win over Oyster Bay, Klapper had her best game, scoring 20 points and grabbing down 19 rebounds. Levy had 16 points, as Roslyn is now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in Conference ABC-II play.
After the Christmas break, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to East Rockaway (Jan. 2) and Locust Valley (Jan. 5) for road games, before returning home on Jan. 12 for a home game against North Shore.
