Saint Mary’s High School Alumni Association will host the 17th Annual Don Monti Memorial Golf Classic and fall Alumni Dinner on Thursday, Sept. 24 at Plandome Country Club.
Don Monti was a student at St. Mary’s in the early 1970s, during which time he was afflicted with leukemia. He died in 1972 at the end of his sophomore year. Almost immediately, his parents Tita and Joe Monti fiercely championed the cause of honoring Don’s name and his valiant battle by continuing the fight against cancer.
Today, that battle continues to be fought with the leadership and compassion of his sister Caroline Monti Saladino, her husband Arthur, and his brother, Richard Monti. The Don Monti Pavilion at North Shore Hospital, The Don Monti Cancer Research Center at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and its many satellite services, is a reminder to all that the fight goes on. The event was named in his memory in 1996 and through the generosity of his family, has continued each year to benefit the students of the high school.
The day will begin at 10 a.m. with registration and brunch, followed by the noon start. Aside from the golf portion of the event, the highlight of the day will be the cocktail reception and dinner including live and silent auctions along with the presentation of the Timothy J. Coughlin ’76 Award. This honor is awarded to an alumnus who exemplifies the true spirit of Christianity through dedication to St. Mary’s and service to others. It is presented in memory of Tim Coughlin who was lost in the attacks on 9/11.
You need not be a golfer to participate in this event. The cocktail reception and dinner is open to all alumni and their guests. Participants are encouraged to spend the entire day or simply join the evening festivities.
