For the Roslyn Bulldogs, the 2012-13 regular season ended in disappointment with a tough 50-47 loss to archrival Jericho. However, the mighty Bulldogs bounced back last Friday, defeating Bethpage, 52-39 in the first round of the Class A playoffs. In the post season, the top stars always come through and for Roslyn that means turning to Mark Gjonlekaj. In the win, Mark had a triple-double, scoring 10 points, pulling down 14 rebounds and most impressively, blocking 10 shots. In recent contests, Terrence Pierce has complimented Gjonlekaj on offense and the Friday win was no different as the senior guard came up huge in the final frame, scoring 10 of Roslyn’s 14 points as the Bulldogs pulled away for the road win. Andrew Slutsky chipped in with 10 points. Next for Roslyn was a quarterfinal game against Mineola, which The Roslyn News will report on in its next issue.
In the Jericho game, Roslyn fell behind 18-8 in the first quarter before turning the tables in the second frame, outscoring Jericho, 18-10. In the second half, the two teams matched goals, with Jericho slightly outscoring the Bulldogs, 22-21 to escape with the win. Pierce and Gjonlekaj both scored in double digits.
Prior to the loss to Jericho, the Bulldogs took methodical wins over South Side (50-40) and New Hyde Park (61-49). In the latter contest, Terrence Pierce had his biggest game of the season, scoring 23 points. Pierce (12 points), Mark Gjonlekaj (18 points) and Harris Silverstein (10 points) also scored in double figures.
