Another winning season has come to an end for the Roslyn Bulldogs as they fell to Hewlett in Class A quarterfinal action, 61-46.
The game, played on Feb. 22 at Hewlett, saw the Bulldogs fighting an uphill battle from the beginning as they fell behind 26-16 at halftime and were outscored 23-11 in the third quarter. With their season on the line, the Bulldogs, a team that has come from behind all year, staged one last fourth quarter rally, outscoring Hewlett 19-12 in the final frame, but that was not enough to win the game and save the season.
For Roslyn, Andrew Slutsky scored 12 points, including two three-pointers. Mark Gjonlekaj added eight points and Terrance Pierce chipped in with six. Roslyn finished the year with a 4-6 record in conference play and a 10-9 mark overall.
Despite the loss, Roslyn started off the playoff season in terrific fashion as they upset Roosevelt, 56-50 in a Feb. 17 road game.
Going into the playoffs, Roosevelt was ranked number 3 in Conference A-II. Roslyn was ranked as the number 14 seed. And Roosevelt did pull out to a handsome 30-20 halftime lead before the Bulldogs began to claw their way back into the game. In the third quarter, Roslyn outscored Roosevelt, 19-15 before turning on the jets for their finest fourth quarter run of the season, outscoring Roosevelt by a 17-5 margin to win by a 56-50 score.
Andrew Slutsky led the way with 14 points, including two three-pointers. Also scoring in double digits was Andrew Wolfe (12) and Mark Gjonlekaj (10 points).
