Mayor Michael R. Koblenz and the Village of East Hills Board of Trustees recently gave the Roslyn High School stars of 2009 Nassau County Basketball Championship team a hero’s welcome. The mayor presented, ceremoniously, individual plaques to each of the players and called their athletic achievements historic and record-breaking. Mayor Koblenz said that everyone is “truly proud of their accomplishments and success. They excelled through their talents to achieve remarkable heights. They deserve our praise and admiration.”
Mayor Koblenz attended the championship game and saw, firsthand, what has been hailed as one of the greatest victories in Roslyn High School history.
In response to the special ceremonies, Coach Levine wrote to the mayor saying, “…Thanks so much for the support this year. Interesting but true story. Two days before the Southside game at the end of practice, Coach Risener addressed the team at half court with the following speech: ‘In addition to playing for the school and community, we are also playing for a championship plaque which will forever be in the school’s trophy case so that when you have kids one day you will be able to show them this in the school’s trophy case.’ What you gave us last night is already proudly displayed in my home in Island Park and the plaques you gave us are something I and the whole team will fondly cherish for the rest of our lives.”
