Local Kayak Club Planning Meeting

The next meeting of the Twin Pines Kayak Club is scheduled for Tuesday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m.  It will be held in the ground floor conference room at the Community Chest Building, 382 Main Street in Port Washington.  There is parking across the street at the Town Dock.

Roslyn Lacrosse Day Promotion

On Saturday, May 8, Roslyn High School and the Roslyn Lacrosse Club will host the first Roslyn Lacrosse Day. The event will be held at the Roslyn High School turf field and will include a full schedule of lacrosse games throughout the day, plus food, contests, games and great Roslyn Lacrosse gear.

Emily Lipari Wins at Penn Relays Carnival

Next year, Roslyn High School track sensation Emily Lipari will be attending Villanova University in Philadelphia on a track scholarship.

‘Save Jessica’ Sports Brunch May 23

Former New York Yankees and New York Mets stars will be attending a sports brunch, one to be held on Sunday, May 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carlyle on the Green at Bethpage State Park.

Vikings Win Travel Baseball Tournament

The North Shore Baseball Alliance 11U Vikings took the March 20-21 NY Travel Baseball Pre-Season Tournament by defeating the Nassau Express of Valley Stream 8-6 in the championship game.

Fifth Annual Spin Marathon a Success

On Sunday, March 21, bikers geared up for the fifth annual Spin marathon to benefit The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention.

Thirty cyclists took part in this unique event, which traversed four different fitness centers, including the Sid Jacobson JCC in Roslyn, Equinox Fitness centers in Roslyn and Woodbury and Ellen’s Fitness and Pilates in Plainview.  Each center donated their facilities, and the spin and exercise instructors volunteered their services to teach the classes. The enthusiastic and dedicated spinners biked and grooved to the rhythm of invigorating music for 30-minute intervals at each of the four locations.  A Pilates class and a stretching segment were interspersed for an additional fitness challenge to the athletes.  Participants traveled as a group by bus to each site. Delicious food was served on the bus and local merchants provided raffle prizes.

Mayor’s Softball Trophy Tournament Winners

The championship and victorious team members of the Mayor’s Softball Trophy Tournament were congratulated by Mayor Koblenz and the East Hills Board of Trustees at the Board of Trustees meeting held in March.

The mayor thanked the leaders of the program, Peter Wagner and Stewart Faden, who he said had built the event into one of the “finest of its kind anywhere. They have performed an important role for our village and this year, once again, we had the finest, most competitive games which were close-fought with exciting action up to the last pitch.”

Remembering a Basketball Legend

Much as we remember the teachers who most impressed us in our school days, the athletic stars of our youth also resonate in our memories.  Roslyn resident and attorney Bob Sack, a member of the basketball Hall of Fame at Hunter College, is one such athlete.  Back in the day, when Sack was a hot shooting forward for Hunter, he so impressed future Fox Sports commentator Charley Rosen that Rosen recently referred to him in one of his columns.

Triathlete to Speak at Greater LI Running Club Meeting

The featured speaker at the Tuesday, April 16 meeting of the Greater Long Island Running Club will be veteran Ironman Triathlete Barbara Cronin-Stagnari of Mineola, who recently added to her incredible athletic resume by successfully completing her first ultramarathon at the Caumsett  State Park USA Track & Field 50 Kilometer National Championship Run  on March 7. She scored as the third place Masters woman in Caumsett.

Honors for NSHS Basketball Stars

With the 2009-2010 season over, several players from the North Shore High School Girls Basketball team received End of Year Awards recognition from opposing coaches.
