Another record-breaking field of 392 runners and walkers crossed the finish line at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School at the 7th annual Heart & Sole 5 Kilometer Run on Sunday morning, July 11. It was the second year in a row that the number of finishers for this event broke the race record.

Lipari Heads to Villanova As Nation’s Top Female Miler

Next fall, Greenvale resident Emily Lipari will be running track for the nationally ranked Villanova University track squad.

In the meantime, Emily made her final year at Roslyn High School a memorable one. She won long distance events in Boston, Binghamton, Greensboro, NC, and Philadelphia, not to mention numerous races against local athletes.

After defeating East Rockaway two games to one in the best of three County Championship series, Friends Academy’s baseball team advanced to the regional semi-finals and Long Island Class C Championship game on June 6 at Farmingdale State College. The Friends Quakers faced the high scoring Suffolk Class C Champions Bishop McGann-Mercy Monarchs with junior Sam Harrington of Locust Valley on the mound.

 

Marty Lyons Foundation to Host 25th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic

 On Monday, July 19, the Marty Lyons Foundation will host its 25th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. Brothers Mike Ryan, president of The LandTek Group and Ed Ryan, vice president of The LandTek Group, will be honored at the event as the 2010 Men of the Year. The LandTek Group, the foremost leader in athletic field and golf course construction, is the corporate sponsor of the fundraising event. Golf-outing registration and brunch will be 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and the cocktail and dinner reception will be at 5:30 p.m.

Long Island Lightning Takes Summer Invitational

The Spring AAU Basketball cavalcade rode through Nassau County Memorial Day Weekend with a stop at Island Garden, which sponsored the Long Island Lightning Summer Invitational Tournament - 2010.  Teams from all over NY, NJ and Connecticut converged to fight it out, and in the 11U division, the Long Island Lightning Rothman squad went undefeated to claim the Championship over a dozen other teams.  Along with playoff appearances in two earlier tournaments, this was the second tournament victory the team earned this season.

 

Winning Season for Red Fury

It has been a banner year for the Albertson-based Red Fury 98’s girls U11 soccer team. The squad is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation. In addition, it recently qualified for the U.S. Regional girls U12 championship.
