The boys’ basketball team for grades 7-9 at Green Vale School took first place from among six schools in the 2011 LIAAIS Boys Basketball Tournament held at Green Vale on the afternoon of Friday, February 4. The final game of the double-elimination tournament was a close one against East Woods School.
On that same day, Green Vale’s girls’ basketball team took third place from among nine teams in its own LIAAIS tournament held at East Woods.
The Wheatley School’s Boys Varsity and Girls Varsity Indoor Track, Fencing, Basketball and Boys Varsity Wrestling have all been recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) for academic excellence in its Scholar/Athlete Recognition Award Program.
Winthrop-University Hospital’s 26th Annual Golf Tournament at The Creek (Locust Valley) and Meadow Brook Club (Jericho). Golf at The Creek begins with a 10 a.m. with brunch and registration, followed by a shotgun tee off at noon.
Runners and walkers from Roslyn and all over Long Island are cordially invited to join in the fun on Sunday, April 3 for the 34th annual Nationwide 10-Kilometer Run for ASPIRE, Long Island’s oldest continuously held 10-K run. This will be the first Sunday running of the event, which had been traditionally held on a Saturday.
Roslyn High School bowler Samuel Kaplan continues to rack up an impressive year in the lanes. Samuel, the captain of the RHS varsity bowling team, bowled a perfect game on Dec. 24 at Sheridan Lanes in Mineola. He ended the season with an average of 205.6, which qualified him to participate in the Individual County Bowling Tournament at Garden City Bowl on Feb. 12, the only student from his conference to do so.
Another winning basketball season has come to an end. The 2010-2011 Roslyn High School boys’ basketball team finished the regular season with a sterling 9-3 record in Conference A-I play and a 12-6 overall. They went into playoff action as the number seven seed in Nassau County Class A.
Roslyn student-athletes notched some big wins on the weekend of Feb. 12-13:
Junior Sam Kaplan placed second in the Nassau County Bowling Championships at Garden City Bowl, finishing with a total pin fall of 1407. Sam tied for the highest game bowled with a score of 268. He will represent Nassau County at the New York State Bowling Championships in Syracuse on March 5 and 6.
Last Tuesday, the Roslyn Bulldogs lost another close game to Westbury, 58-54. With the loss, both squads finished Conference A-1 play with identical 9-3 records. However, since Westbury won both regular season contests with Roslyn, they are conference champions.
Last Friday night, Sportime of Roslyn was the site of a gala tennis charity event, the first annual Ace for Autism Celebrity Tennis Pro-Am and Clinic.
The event was hosted by the North Shore Autism Circle and drew well over 150 people, who were there to watch several major tennis stars perform for a worthy cause as local tennis enthusiasts, including youngsters serving as ball boys, all partnered with the pros to raise funds to support the charity.
When Janelle Brooks moved to the Roslyn area from Florida, she noticed that Long Island had plenty of gym clubs, however they were lacking an indoor cycling location with plenty of options for exercise.
