Islanders Media Day Provides Preview for Upcoming Year

The New York Islanders are currently several years deep into their rebuilding process, but seven months from now, the team fully intends on securing one of eight playoff spots in the National Hockey League’s Eastern Conference.

At the Islanders Media Day on Tuesday, Sept. 21, Anton Newspapers was invited to an on-ice practice and locker room session with the team during training camp, and the energy surrounding the team mirrored its playoffs-or-bust mentality. 

 

Bradley to Appear in All-American Bowl

U.S. Army personnel will travel to Roslyn High School this Friday, Sept. 24 to officially select Ciara Bradley as part of the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. Ms. Bradley will perform in the band during the 2011 U.S. Army All-American Bowl game, one to be held Jan. 8, 2011 in San Antonio, TX.

 

Eisenhower Mini-Golf, Batting Cage Fall Hours

The miniature-golf course and outdoor batting cage at Eisenhower Park began fall hours on Sept. 6. The batting cage opens at 10 a.m. daily, with the last token sold at 6:30 p.m. Monday - Thursday and 8 p.m. Friday - Sunday. The mini-golf course also opens at 10 a.m. daily and sells the last round of golf at 7 p.m. Monday - Thursday and 8:30 p.m. Friday - Sunday.

 

Big Year for Local Aquatic Squad

The Manorhaven Red Devils, based in Port Washington, came in second place at a recent Nassau County championship meet, losing by two points to the Lynbrook recreation team. It was a very close meet, coming down to the last events. The Red Devils has swimmers from the Roslyn area, plus from Port Washington and Manhasset.

 

On Aug. 16, the Joseph C. Zoller Memorial Fund had its Sixth Annual Golf Classic at Plandome Country Club. This event supports the scholarship established in Joe’s name at the Fordham University Graduate School of Education. Guests enjoyed a great day of

Long Island’s Belmont Lake State Park will be the site of the first Walkathon sponsored by the Lymphatic Research Foundation (LRF).  The event is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 19.  All proceeds will support LRF’s mission to fund effective treatments and cures for those living with lymphatic diseases and lymphedema.

Roslyn Marching Bulldogs Band Ready for Big Season

The Roslyn Marching Bulldogs, under the direction of Pat Patterson, have just concluded an enjoyable week of rehearsals at Camp Echo in upstate New York in preparation for their upcoming competitive season. The 100-member Bulldogs were able to perfect the music, marching drills and dance choreography for their program, A Show Without Words, in record time. The band is excited to debut the new routine during the half time show at the Roslyn High School home game on Thursday, Sept. 16.

On Oct. 2, the Marching Bulldogs will lead the Homecoming Parade from Roslyn High School down Main Street to the Bryant Library. Following a half time performance during the home game, the band will kick-off its own competitive season later that evening competing in the New York State Field Band Conference Huntington Show to be held at Walt Whitman High School. The Bulldogs are looking forward to another exciting and winning season.

 

 

Polo Match to Benefit Saddle Rock Ranch

The First Annual Polo Match to benefit Saddle Rock Ranch, operated by Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE), was held at the Meadowbrook Polo Club in Old Westbury on Saturday, Aug. 7. The National Foundation for Human Potential raised just under $20,000 for the program and operation at Saddle Rock Ranch, and the Squadron A Foundation.
