Head Coach Capuano: Fans Want a Hard-Working Team

While the future of the New York Islanders’ franchise might be on thin ice due to the rejection of a $400 million bond by Nassau County voters, it was business as usual for head coach Jack Capuano at the team’s annual prospects mini-camp last month at the Nassau Coliseum.

The Islanders, who finished with the National Hockey League’s fourth-worst record in 2010-2011, were without cornerstone players Mark Streit and Kyle Okposo for most of the year, not to mention a resident injury bug and a coaching change.

Sands Point Preserve Sprint Aug. 13

Friday, 22 July 2011 00:00

Runners from all over Long Island are invited to join in the fun at the “Sands Point Preserve Sprint for the Feinstein Institute” on Saturday morning, Aug. 13. This 5 Kilometer running race and recreational walk offers a unique combination of paved paths and runner friendly trails (and a surprise or two) through the woodlands and Long Island Sound vistas of the Sands Point Preserve, at the north end of the Port Washington peninsula.

The 216-acre Sands Point Preserve is an unparalleled mixture of natural and landscaped areas. Forests, meadows, beach and cliffs, gardens, and freshwater pond provide habitats for a variety of plants and animals. The proximity of different habitats provided the Club the opportunity to create a 5 Kilometer course that will enable local runners and walkers to experience the various aspects of the entire Preserve.

Centre Island Swim-A-Cross Dunked for 2011, May Return

Written by D.F. Karppi Friday, 22 July 2011 00:00
Swimmers from all over Nassau County will be disappointed to hear that the 2011 Swim-A-Cross usually held in August has been dunked. Sam Kille, American Red Cross senior director, Marketing & Public Relations of the Metro NY Region announced, “The Swim-A-Cross at Centre Island Beach will not be held this year—no decision has been made yet as to whether or not it may be revamped and brought back next summer.

“Sadly, it has not been making enough money considering the time and costs to host it. Ten years ago, in 2001, nearly 200 swimmers took part and it was netting approximately $22,000. In 2002, likely bolstered by 9/11, the net jumped to $35,000,” he said. That year many people swam in memory of a loved one who died in the attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

Matt Zeifman Hones His Skills On a Daily Basis

Five-year old Matt Zeifman has a daily schedule more rigorous than the average youngster. According to his father, Matt wakes up early and foregoes morning cartoons altogether. Instead, from 8 to 9 a.m. nearly every morning, he is at an indoor facility, often Sportime of Roslyn, playing tennis.

Matt has picked up the love of the game from his father Mitch, a native of Brooklyn who has lived in the Roslyn area for the past decade. And when Matt’s daily lessons come to an end, he continues playing, hitting tennis balls across the net from his father.
