Wheatley’s Spanish Prowess Honored

Ten students from The Wheatley School will receive honors for their performance on the 2013 National Spanish Exam. These awards will be given out at the Long Island Chapter’s annual award ceremony to be held on May 30.

The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) is responsible for administering the exam to schools each year.

This year’s Wheatley winners included four eighth-graders: Isabella Araujo, Lianna Golden, Rachel Koty and Teddy Lewis.  The ninth grade winners included Kayla Barroca, Krista Chen, Mohammed Khanzada, Julian Nathan, Jaclyn Stroud and Andrew Zuckerman. All students will receive a gold medallion and a check from the Long Island Chapter of the AATSP. Both Julian Nathan and Andrew Zuckerman placed in the 99th percentile for the exam.

“Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with 156,000 students participating this year.”
