More than 200 Buckley community members and friends gathered at the Garden City Hotel late last month to celebrate Buckley’s 90th anniversary. Gala chairs and the gala committee along with the director of development and alumni relations, assistant director of development for parents’ association and special events, and development assistant attended to every detail of this star-studded red-and-blue event and are to be credited for making this a wonderful evening.
Buckley Headmaster Dr. Jean-Marc Juhel thanked those who attended, or who underwrote the event, or who made generous gifts to Buckley. Thanks to their generosity and participation, the 2013 Spring Gala raised $117,000, which will fund the purchase of 180 iPads for students (in addition to the 140 the school already uses), related professional development for the teachers, and the infrastructure to support iPad use come September.
In September 2013, every student in grades 5-8 will receive an iPad; in grades 1-4, each grade level will be equipped with 20 iPads; in early childhood, each classroom will receive 4 iPads. Buckley is fortunate to be able to give access to tablet technology and pedagogy to all of its students and faculty (at the beginning of this year every teacher was issued an iPad) to continue to broaden, deepen, and enrich learning.
The Gala Journal included Buckley students’ thoughts about what they would want to give Buckley on its 90th anniversary and the video featured all the children “at home” at Buckley.
As Dr. Juhel stated to the gathered crowd, “Neither ‘innovation’ nor ‘community’ would define our school without the support and involvement of each and every one of you, and for that I am deeply grateful.”
